Thumbs Up-The Scrollwheel
As someone who has a moderate amount of technology experience, I’ve definitely felt frustrated watching other people searching the web, typing the url into the search bar or copy and pasting by using the mouse and going up to “Edit” instead of using the keyboard shortcuts. It’s not wrong per say, but this video describes pretty well how it makes me feel:
Based on the original comic by NeonNoodle and animated by Guy Collins.

Old Spice Youtube Responses – Thumbs Up
Update: great article from AdWeek about how this Old Spice campaign worked behind the scenes: Article (via @JGF3)
Update 2: Another interesting post about how the videos are made, with a behind-the-scenes picture.
Earlier today, Old Spice (@OldSpice on Twitter) took a giant leap forward in the viral marketing world. Utilizing two of the most popular social media tools in Twitter and Youtube, Old Spice responded to Twitterers messages to the brand by use of Youtube videos featuring Isaiah Mustafa and his recently popular character in Old Spice commercials like the one below.
In their most recent genius marketing idea, Old Spice gets personal with its viewers, followers, consumers, and admirers by having the Old Spice Guy respond individually to numerous @replies on Twitter. Through this campaign it encourages other viewers, followers, consumers, and admirers of Old Spice IN ADDITION TO the everyday person to do a few things:
- Watch at least one response video on their Youtube channel (which leads to watching 10-15 more response, which leads to watching other commercials)
- Follow @OldSpice on Twitter to see what they’ve been saying
- Interact with the brand by @replying to Old Spice your own question or comment in hopes that the Old Spice Guy will respond.
With these three actions, repeated by thousands upon thousands of social mediates, the Old Spice campaign successfully went viral and will be something soon that even more people are talking about and interacting with. Here are two examples of the Old Spice Guy responding to Twitter replies.
Old Spice, if somehow you stumbled upon this blog and you’re reading this, would you give yourself a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down?

Hot Chip – ‘I Feel Better’ Video – Toss Up
I’m honestly not even sure what to think about this music video. It is so weird, first I thought it was from some comedy group, not real musical artists. Things start getting weird around the 50 second mark, with a character that could probably best be described as ‘Cancer Jesus’ but it only gets even more insane after three minutes in. My mind has been blown. What do you think?
Microsoft Trying To Be Cool – Thumbs Down
I’m sure you have seen a YouTube video of a cool flash mob. Even some “flash mob” type commercials, obviously for a brand, are still entertaining (the T-Mobile video of people singing in London comes to mind).
I bet you have also been inside an Apple Store to try out or buy some of their products.
Well, Microsoft decided to put these two things together (an Apple store and a “flash mob” type of event with their employees) in an uninspiring display of song and dance at the Microsoft Store in Mission Viejo:
This is what the original poster of the video said on his blog: Mid way through our visit the entire store broke out into song. Now I have seen this gimmick before at Coldstone Creamery and I know how they have been criticized in the media for it, but here it did not seem forced nor contrived, I would honestly say that this was the staff letting go, having some fun and not taking the brand all to seriously.
Really?? I think it looks both forced and contrived.
He also said this about the look of the store: I guess I have been disconnected from the platform for quite a while because I did not even realize that Microsoft had store but I have heard so many great things about Windows 7 I just had to check it out. I half expected the store to be a bland uninspiring cheap knockoff of an Apple Store, but WOW was I in for a surprise.
Really?? To me, the store looks exactly like an Apple Store. If I didn’t know it was a Microsoft Store, I would think it was selling iPhones and MacBooks. All the details seem the same – right down to the t-shirts and lanyards the employees are wearing.
In summary and in conclusion, the video of the Microsoft employees breaking out into dance has a 1.5 star rating on YouTube. I’m surprised it isn’t lower.

Sunday Movies 2
This man started the greatest dance party of all time.
Someone please get this kid some velcro and padding.
A lesson about math from which I’m sure we could all learn a thing or two.
Final project video from a third year game development student at UOIT. Surprisingly, he received an A in the class.
Another animation. The voice is someone on an acid trip going through things in a closet. Not a family friendly clip.
Boone Oakley – Thumbs Up
Boone Oakley, an advertising agency, decided to make their homepage a YouTube video. It kind of has the same feel as a Demetri Martin routine. In an industry where everyone is trying to stand out and be noticed, Boone Oakley is succeeds with their fun video. Check it out for yourself:
